Ownership of an Austin Whippet Aeroplane.

Extracted from a memoir, written by Air Commodore H. M. Pearson CBE

‘After being commissioned as an pilot officer in the RAF at Cranwell in late 1928 I was determined by buy a light aeroplane. I eventually found what I was looking for at Castle Bromwich which, if my memory is correct, was owned by the comedian, Tommy Handley, but which was being sold a representative from the Flying Club. A figure of £50 was agreed, payable at £5 per month.

I was stationed at RAF Calshot, Southampton water. I alerted my friend “ Red “ Scarlet that I was on my way and was met on the field with him in his Austin Seven Gordon England Cup. The tail-skid of the Whippet fitted nicely into the boot of the Seven and was towed to the car park where it remained for a week. The following weekend after finding an empty annexe to one of the flying boat hangers, it was again loaded into the Seven’s boot and towed there.’
